OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH PHYSICIAN (OHP)
Doctors in occupational medicine work are specialist clinicians and advisers to both the employer and employee on the relationship between work and health. They can visit workplaces and assess a range of work-related health issues. They are impartial and provide medical evidence-based advice. Occupational Health Physicians can help an employer significantly reduce risks and thus assist with optimising productivity while reducing health-related costs.
Reasons for Assessments
Specialists in occupational medicine will have had in-depth training and experience in occupational medicine and will be judged to be ‘fully knowledgeable in occupational medicine theory, practice and delivery’. They will be members or fellows of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine and will have the letters MFOM or FFOM after their names. Occupational Health Physicians can bring a wealth of practical knowledge of the broader context in which such medical assessments take place, as well as the experience to assess fitness for work.
Occupational physicians will be familiar with risk assessment for health risks in the workplace and with the introduction of necessary controls. They will be especially experienced in such things as health and medical surveillance of workers and maintaining health and surveillance records. An OHP can be required to step in for more complex or severe medical issues.
Recommended Frequency: Upon the receipt of any management referral a Triage system is carried out by our experienced occupational nurse advisers and where suitable this will be placed by an occupational nurse advisers or an occupational health physician. Cases maybe referred to OHP directly if cases :
- Complex Case
- Referred by an OHA
- If permanent restrictions are required
- Ill Health Retirement
- Capability has become a concern
- Health surveillance reviews
- Where clinical guidance is required
- HAV’s Tier 3 / 4 – prognosis
- Potential RIDDOR reportable condition
Appointment Times: Initial assessment 60 minutes (Additional time can be added depending on complexity of case). Review appointments 30 minutes.

PENSION REVIEWS
Are conducted by the occupational health physician and vary in accordance with underlying insurance company
Reasons for Assessments
Pensions vary and can be classed as Permanent, Partial or does not meet the criteria. This is assessed by an OHP and takes into account any further medical evidence is required.
Recommended Frequency: The length of time utilised will depend each medical conditions.
Appointment Times: Time ranges from 45 minutes to 3 hours
